I have read that the colder a dogs nose is the more likely they will be open or semi open on track. I've seen good dogs open, semi open, & tight lipped as you can get, whats your opinion on this?

That's a good question. Opinions will vary on this no doubt. I think it all comes down to the individual dog. We run a all hound pack on hogs but also use cur dogs to separately. So I guess I see both sides of the fence. Typically most people believe that a hound is more likely to have a colder nose than most cur dogs. Which may very well b true. But I have seen some cold nose cur dogs that didn't say a word until they located the hog. No matter how long they trailed it. But I have seen some hot nosed curs go to yappin as soon as they get a whiff of a hog. Same way with hounds. But typically most hounds bark whether they're trailin or have the hog jumped and running. So therefore I don't think the barking has alot to do with coldness of a dogs nose. I think it's just the particular dog. No matter what breed. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

the hell with a a yipping dog on a hog. Once they do that get rid of em.....Unless you got unlimited time and land to hunt. Hogs are running more than ever and it's gonna get worse everywhere. I put a dog of mine up for sale today cause she wont shut the beep up! Some people love a yipping dog. Guy just paid big money for Alley, now I got her sister for sale for the same reason. I don't care how fast they are, you will catch more hogs with silent dogs. PERIOD! Can you get it done with open dogs, yes. Just not with me.

You'll catch more hogs with runnin catch dogs. But a hog will run just as quick on a couple bay dog as it will on a pack of hounds.

If your dog can can run a track faster than a hog can make em with a little grit and alot of heart is what makes a good dog in my opinion open or not that dog has to want it more than you, if not then its a dud pack it up take it back to the house.

I don't believe nose has any thing to with open or silent. I've seen hot nosed dogs that barked every breath & colder nosed dogs that never made a peep. I prefer silent & violent. I've got rid of some damn good dogs in the past because they opened on track.

I wonder how many of you guys that bad mouth open dogs and tell other guys to get rid of them if they bark have ever hunted behind a good pack of open mouth hounds. I'm betting not many. Iv grew up doing both and still do. They're two different worlds. For you guys that have never hound hunted hogs, you should give it a try before deciding you don't like it based on other people's opinions. It's a alot of fun and produces just as many hogs as any other way of hunting when done behind a good pack of hounds.

I don't base my opinion on what anybody else tells me. I base it on personal experience. I know for a fact if you run open mouth dogs where I do 90% of my hunting your gonna end up in the next county & empty handed.

Agreed. You definitely need the property to accomidate running hounds or a long winded open mouth cur. I could see coming up empty handed when having to pull your dogs off a hog because the hog is leaving the property your allowed to hunt. We always use our curs on our smaller properties. There's nothing like a good hound race if you have the property to do it on though.

I'll agree with you on a good hound race but my hounds better be running a deer. Ive got 5 walker hounds run em on deer.

I here ya boarhog1. We only run our hounds on hogs but I'm friends with some deer dog hunters that take there dogs ONLY running deer very seriously. Iv got a few good hog hounds from these guys. And they've got a few good deer dogs from me lol. We would run deer but the thing we like about running hogs is you can shoot whatever crosses the road. Where as with deer you gotta make sure it's a buck. Supposed to any way (wink wink) lol.

I dont think any different on the guys or gals that run hounds for a hog, but I do think it defeats the purpose in what you are hunting for. for instance when you run a boar hog all over gods creation what good is the meat then when you shoot him coming across the road, what I like to do is bay em, catch em, cut em and put him in a pen for a little if I keep a boar hog to begin with. that's is the main reason why I use curr dogs, so I aint gotta shoot whatever comes across, like I said not knocking ur way just stating why I use em.

I could fall asleep listening to a good hound race, its music in the woods. I like my hounds but I also like the sudden sound of a hog bay by some closed mouth dogs in the still of the night

Definately. I love hunting my cur dogs as much as my hounds. Two different things and I love them both.
