How do you guys feel about docking tails? Just had a litter of pups 2 days ago and I've never docked tails before or plan on doing it myself since I have no experience but wasn't sure if there was anyone near Brevard County that's done it before and can do it or has any advice about it. Don't have to have it done just want input :]

They are 1/2 kemmer cur and 1/2 blackmouth. Mom is a pretty good find and bay not quite finished yet but pretty damn good, dad is a badass find and catch, no stop to the dam and sire at all. Pretty excited to see how these pups will turn out. Got 3 males and 3 females.

I always use a knife and a hammer on a block of wood when the puppies are just a couple days old so the little that they bleed the mom will lick and take care of. It has alwaysworked good for me.

If you really want them docked then dockem but some curs look good with docked tailed and some just dont turn out right. I like to look at where the tail is set on the parents does it set high or low before I consider docking puppy tails I try to imagine what the parents would look like with docked tails. If your going to dock them do it at 3 to 4 days old before the central nervous system fully develops. I personally use a straight pair of hemostat clamps to clamp don on the tail where I want to cut and then the sharpest razor knife available and then I slice infront of the hemostat clamps and dip the tail in quick stop and thats it. Be sure to sanitize all of your utencils before docking and dip or spray the tail with alcohol before docking.

I like a bob tail. One less body part to get bit.
