A buddy of mine has a pretty good dog but she will trash on a deer if there is one around. She loves a hog and will get on them most of the time but if there is no hog sign she will trash and jump a deer. He has tried breaking her with a shock collar but if you shock her she shuts down goes back to the dog box. Any other tricks?

sounds mean but take a fresh deer hide and a 55 gallon drum with lid on it put the dog and the hide in it put the top on it an roll it down a big hill .....dont laugh it works . I had a dog I couldn't break with a collar and this trick worked . I was at my ropes end with this dog and he was a great dog just trashed from time to time .

The only sane way I can think is to use one of your fresh deer harvests. have a hog and a deer. Put dog on long lead and correct when it gives attention to the deer. Praise when it goes after the hog. Do this everyday as long as you can stand the smell! I clean my deer close to the kennels and leave them around for a little while. I still have a dog that runs a deer from time to time. Hasn't lately, but I would never get rid of her.

Those are some good and some crazy ideas. I have found that Time on hogs does the best. If you have too start only turning the dog loose when the others have one bayed or you see the hog so it knows that is what you want them to find and catch for awhile.. Everytime you catch them trashing put them back in the truck for the night and scold them. Beating and shocking dogs does not get you anyplace. Once the deer is gone and you get to them and scold them they do not know why your doing it, They are hunting and that is something you don't want to discourage you just want to get them directed to the game you want. I have seen too many dogs ruin because people get carried away. If it gets to be too much sell the dog and tell the people why. Some hunters like a dog that will run both. But in my opinion trying to keep them on hogs and hunting them as much as possible is the best way to train ANY dog. It just takes time and patience.

Good point Mag. Them new sportdog collars have the shock option on them. May be able to use that when you see the dog chasing a deer. But I would only shock if you could see the dog and deer. JMO Run them young dogs when you know there are hogs. And yes I agree with keeping them on a lead early on if you have too.
