I bought a real nice finished strike dog and she is finding and baying allot of hogs but can't stop the big runners. Last night a big one killed one of my new pups and slipped her. What are the pro's and cons of running a RCD with a strike/bay dog?

The runners are the ones that live lol kind of like breeding dogs. You breed good dogs, you get good dogs usualy. The hogs that are surviving are the runners lol so they are breeding survival of the fastest.

pros-if the dog has a good nose and hunt in them they will find pigs for you. they might get to the bay faster.you dont have to walk them on a leash.
cons-youll get more dogs cut down. the catch dog might be on there own hog and never make it to the bay.if you see a hog and dont have a catch dog on a leash or any find dogs with you wont have a catch dog to let loose. bull dogs normally over heat and heat stroker quicker.
ill let a young catch dog run with my curs but once they get up there in age i keep them on a leash.

The runners are usually from people hunting hounds on them, or open mouth dogs. Not always but seems that way to me..To me you will have issues running 1 rough dog with dogs that are not going to help them. He won't live long because he will have no help. All my Cur dogs are rough and makes them live longer in my experience. I have been at this 17 years.. That is like running open mouth dogs and silent dogs, Just does not work that well. A silent dog will only go to a barking dog so many times and not see a hog before he stops honoring their bark. If i was you i would build your pack around that high dollar female you got and get you a lead in catch dog for when they have one held. You run her with rough dogs, she will get rough herself and probably get killed.. Starting is fun and frustrating, but asking questions and meeting people will help you a bunch. Thats like i have friends that hunt hounds, i like them but i won't hunt my Cur dogs with theirs. Two different styles that just don't mix and make for a long and frustrating night. The people who catch the most hogs are the ones with the most consistant packs of dogs. And quiet in my opinion. lol. That takes time and money or just a lot of money and time.

I'm told she will catch with the catch dog. Last night had its ups and down's I had other bay dogs with me but the only one that seemed to get it and honeored her bay was the 6 month old pup. The other helper dog I bought was told she would honor a bay never left my site. Definitely a lesson learned. Thanks for the input guys. This is a good forum!

Magnum is right exspiecially on the open vs silent dogs , mine are silent till in the face never open on a track now a bigger hog my gyp will not catch so my cat honors but my cat if he finds um u will hear nothing untill the squeel but to each his own cup of tea , I will not let my dogs around an open dog , I've had couple folks I've invited that said there dogs were silent on trail cuz I know when my dogs hit a track I knowmy dogs and there so called silent dogs lit up soon as mine took it needless to say I was pissssssed

I ran a lab rednose cross. Best rcd I've owned. I agree with magnum build off the gyp. You might have to break down and buy another gritty cur to run with your gyp.. it's all in preference...

That's the thing I have a gritty 4 year old Catahoula I bought the was supposed to GO TO THE BAY I've seen her in the bay pen she is very gritty. I'm going to do some mock training this weekend with a tied up hog and try to teach the rest of these guys to haul beep to snickers when she's barking. Snickers will catch with another dog but she won't mess with a bigone unless she has help. I just have to be patient I guess I have one good dog and now I have to try to get the rest of these right and after they know what to do I expect them to do it or they gots to go.

it'd all palm heads and the hogs always head deepinto the cypress swamp is where he keeps slipping my dog. She ran him for well over 1,000 yards last night. I'm going to regroup and try to get the rest of these atleast going to her bay and see if we can shut this big mofo down.
